OF COURSE YOU CAN!

A SERIES of courses aimed at getting Sunderland people into learning are taking place at ETEC this autumn.
Courses, which are running at ETEC House, include Home improvement to DIY for.
The eight-week courses starts on 27 October and takes place on Tuesdays between 1pm and 3pm.
The four-week Your Guide to Using a Hammer starts on 6 November.
It takes place on Tuesdays between 9.30am and 12.15pm.
The four-week Get that Shelf Straight starts on 4 November.
Sessions take place on Wednesdays between 9.30am and 12.15pm.
Courses taking place at Hudson House include How to be an Internet Whizz.
The four-week course starts on 3 December. Sessions take place on Wednesdays between 9.30am and 12.15pm.
The four-week Telling Stories – Reading and Speaking Aloud starts on 6 November.
Sessions take place on Fridays between 9.30am and 12.15pm.
All courses are funded by Sunderland City Council in the biggest programme of its kind to be run by ETEC to date.
Classes are half-price for the over-60s.

WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS! 

ETEC swept the board at the Back on the Map Employment and Enterprise Awards 2009.
Overall winner in the vocational training awards category was Community Decorator Joe White.
Joe was also winner of the Vocational Achievement (under 25) Award.
Former Contact Your Future worker Sharon Crinson achieved the Vocational Achievement (Over 25) Award.
Michael Little was given the Young Person’s Achievement Award in the Education Awards.
Commendations were given to E2E learner Cara Eltringham, Learndirect learner Ovi Dirtu and ETEC Construction’s Leighton Cook.
The ceremony took place at the Stadium of Light.

THE CHAMPIONS! 

ETEC has awarded its latest batch of top trainees.
The latest Trainee of the Month ceremony took place on Friday 25 September at ETEC House.
Courtney Deakin was given the title Trainee of the Month in administration and IT.
Leighton Cook and Shaun Butler took the honours in ETEC Construction.
David Cleghorn and Alex Muter were awarded Trainee of the Month in Skills for Life.
Travis Robson and Sophie Walton took the honours on the E2E Construction Routeway programme.
Kurt Harding was given the Trainee of the Month title in Community Decorators.

IT’S A CELEBRATION! 

ETEC hosts an open day on Wednesday 28 October to celebrate its newly-acquired charitable status.
The event gives ETEC the chance to showcase its services and achievements.
A number of activities including face painting and free refreshments will take place between 10am and 3pm.
ETEC Development Trust was granted charitable status in August 2009.

DIARY DATES

Trainee of the Month Ceremonies: 20 October, 24 November and 15 December 2009.
All ceremonies take place on Tuesdays at 9am at ETEC House, 90 Coronation Street, Hendon, Sunderland.
Staff Christmas Party: ETEC’s premises will be closed to visitors from 11am on Friday 18 December until Monday 21 December.

FIRST AMONG EQUALS 

FOR the fourth year running, ETEC has been selected as a finalist in the annual North East Equality Awards.
ETEC is a finalist in two categories of the 2009 awards.
The charity has been shortlisted alongside Shildon and Darlington Training Ltd and NCT Ltd in the award for Employers of up to 50 staff.
It has also been shortlisted alongside Prima Training and Shildon and Darlington Training Ltd in the category of Learning Provider with up to 50 staff.
ETEC won the award in this category in 2008.
The Awards ceremony takes place on Friday 23 October at the Gateshead Hilton.
