WHAT A SONG AND DANCE!
SCORES of organisations in Sunderland took part
in the city’s biggest hokey cokey to mark Play Day.
The event was organised by ETEC’s Play Together with broadcaster Sun FM
joining in the fun. Sun FM played the hokey cokey to mark the end of the
event at 2.50pm.
Fifty groups participated at a number of venues across Sunderland.
The event, part of Play England’s Play Day, had the theme of Make Time!
Georgia Reed, Play Together’s Play Consultant, said: “The whole event
was about everyone joining in and having fun.”
Play Days were organised by voluntary and community organisations, who
are part of the Play Together Network. Youngsters, aged four to 16, took
part.

JUMPING FOR JOY
A FORMER gymnast who left school at the age of
nine to travel the world has been highly commended at a high profile
awards’ event.
Romanian-born Ovi Dirtu was highly commended in the Progression category
at the North East Region’s Awards Ceremony of the Learndirect
Achievement Awards 2009.
Ovi, of Hendon, Sunderland, was also shortlisted as a finalist in the
Outstanding Learner Award. The awards ceremony took place at St James’
Park, Newcastle.
It was hosted by BBC Look North presenters Gerry Jackson and Sharon
Barbour.

THEY’RE THE TOPS!
ETEC has awarded its latest batch of trainees in
two Trainee of the Month ceremonies held in June and July.
Matthew Hunter and Demi Craik were awarded Trainee of the Month titles
for the Construction Routeway Programme in June.
Travis Robson and Danny Brown took the honours in July. Steven Rodgers
was given the award for Skills for Life in July with Jacqueline Anderson
and Jemma Leonard taking the honours in June.
Joinery volunteer Stewart Rae was presented with the Trainee of the
Month Award for the Learndirect Programme in July. Leighton Cook was
given the award for ETEC Construction in June.
Hasina Begum was presented with the Trainee of the Month award for
administration and IT in June.

FIRST AMONG EQUALS
FOR the fourth year running, ETEC has been
selected as a finalist in the annual North East Equality Awards.
ETEC has been shortlisted in the employer, learning provider and
work/life balance categories.

DIARY DATES
Trainee of the Month Ceremonies: 18 August, 22
September and Tuesday 20 October 2009.
All ceremonies take place on Tuesdays at 9am at ETEC House, 90
Coronation Street, Hendon, Sunderland.
August Bankholiday: ETEC will close on Friday 28 August at 3.30pm and
re-open at 8.30am on Tuesday 1 September Staff Christmas Party: ETEC’s
premises will be closed to visitors from 11am on Friday 18 December
until Monday 21 December.
QUIDS IN!
ETEC is looking for an apprentice to work in its
busy finance and administration department.
Duties will include helping with weekly payroll and travel claims.
Applicants should hold - or be expected to gain - a minimum of five
GCSEs at grades A to C.
